A person who neglects rational thinking might ask themselves, "How did I come into existence?" and answer, "I exist somehow!" Following such reasoning, they will navigate life without pondering such questions.
However, a person of reason should contemplate how they were created and determine the meaning of their life based on their reflections. In this contemplation, they need not fear, as some humans do, to conclude, "I have been created." Those who avoid pondering this matter actually wish to avoid accountability to the Creator. They fear having to change their lifestyle, habits, and ideology if they admit to being created. Hence, they evade obedience to their Creator. This is the attitude of those who deny God. Conversely, someone who evaluates their existence with wisdom and rationality will see within themselves only signs of Allah's creation. They acknowledge that their existence depends on the cooperation of thousands of intricate systems they neither created nor control. They understand the fact that "they were created." By knowing their Creator, they strive to understand the purpose for which God has created them.
For anyone seeking to understand the meaning of God's creation, there is a guide: the Quran. This book is the guidance bestowed upon all human beings created by God on Earth.
The fact that the phenomenon of creation aligns with the descriptions in the Quran holds great significance for those with intellect.
The following pages contain various information for those who are wise and of sound mind, illustrating how "they were created" and the marvel of this creation.
The story of human creation begins in two distinct places. Human life begins with the union of two separate substances within the bodies of men and women, which are created separately yet harmoniously. Clearly, the sperm in a man's body is not produced by his will and control, just as the egg in a woman's body is not formed by her will and control. Indeed, they are not even aware of the formation of these cells.
It is clear that these two substances, originating from man and woman, are created in perfect harmony. The creation of these two substances, their union, and their transformation into a human being are truly a great marvel.
"Testicles and Sperm Cells: The Remarkable Beginnings of Human Creation"
Sperm, which is the first stage in human creation, is produced "outside" the human body. This is because sperm production can only occur in an environment that is 2°C cooler than normal body temperature. To maintain this temperature level, the testicles are covered with specialized skin. This skin contracts in cold weather and expands in hot weather, ensuring a constant temperature. Can a man "control" and manage this intricate balance himself? Certainly not. He isn't even aware of it. Those who deny creation can only say, this is an "unknown bodily function." The definition of an "unknown function" is merely a "name."
Sperm is produced in the testicles at a rate of 1000 per minute. These cells have a unique design for their journey towards the female egg cell, as if they "recognize" the destination. Sperm consists of a head, neck, and tail. The tail helps it move like a fish towards the uterus.
The head, which contains a portion of the baby's genetic code, is covered by a special protective shield. The function of this shield becomes evident at the entrance of the mother's uterus: here, the environment is highly acidic. Clearly, the sperm is covered by this protective shield by "someone" who knows about this acidity. (This acidic environment's condition is aimed at protecting the mother from microbes.)
What is ejaculated into the uterus isn't just millions of sperm. Seminal fluid is a mixture of various liquids.
The fluid in this seminal fluid contains sugar, providing the energy needed by the sperm. Furthermore, its main composition has various tasks, such as neutralizing the acidity at the entrance to the uterus and maintaining a lubricating medium for sperm movement. (Here again, it's evident that two distinct and interdependent entities are created to be perfectly compatible). Spermatozoa undertake a challenging journey within the mother's womb to reach the egg cell. Regardless of their endurance, roughly only a thousand out of about 200-300 million spermatozoa reach the egg cell.
"Egg Cell"
If sperm is designed in accordance with the egg cell, the egg cell itself is prepared as the seed of life in a completely different medium... Without the woman's knowledge, the mature egg cell is released from the ovary and enters the abdominal cavity. It is then captured by the fingers at the end of the organ called the fallopian tube. Subsequently, the egg cell begins to move with the help of the hair-like movements within the fallopian tube. The size of this egg cell is just half the size of a grain of salt.
The egg cell and sperm meet within the fallopian tube. Here, the egg cell starts releasing a special fluid. With the assistance of this fluid, spermatozoa find the location of the egg cell. We must realize that when we say the egg cell "starts releasing," we are not referring to a conscious human or being. This cannot be explained through the concept of chance, that microscopic protein masses "decide" this action "on their own," then "prepare" and release chemical compounds to attract spermatozoa. This is evidence of a design in this process.
In short, the reproductive system is designed to bring together the egg cell and sperm. This means that the female reproductive system is created to suit the needs of spermatozoa, and spermatozoa are created to suit the requirements of the female body's environment.
Meeting of Sperm and Egg Cell
As the sperm—intended to fertilize the egg cell—draws closer to the egg, the egg cell once again "decides" to release a fluid, specifically prepared for the sperm, to dissolve the protective shield around the sperm. Consequently, the sac of dissolving enzymes at the tip of the sperm, designed exclusively for the egg cell, is opened. When the sperm reaches the egg cell, these enzymes perforate the egg cell's membrane, allowing the sperm to enter. Spermatozoa surrounding the egg begin to vie for entry, but usually only one sperm successfully fertilizes the egg.
The verses in the Quran that describe this stage are incredibly intriguing. The Quran states that humans are made from the essence of a humble fluid, which is semen.
It's not the fluid carrying the sperm that fertilizes the egg, but rather the "essence" within it. This essence is the sperm itself, which acts as the agent of fertilization—or more precisely, the chromosomes within that sperm, which are the "essence" of the sperm.
When the egg cell allows one sperm to enter, other sperm cannot enter. The reason is the electric field formed around the egg cell. The region surrounding the egg carries a negative (-) charge, and as the first sperm penetrates the egg, this charge changes to positive (+). Therefore, the egg cell, now charged the same as the other sperm outside, begins to reject them.
This signifies that the electric charges of these two substances, formed independently and separately, also correspond.
Finally, the male DNA within the sperm and the female DNA within the egg unite. Now, the first seed, the first cell of a new human, exists within the mother's womb: the zygote.
A Mass of Blood Attached to the Uterus…
When the sperm from the male joins with the egg cell from the female, the nucleus of the future baby begins to form. This single cell, known biologically as a "zygote," immediately starts developing through cell division, eventually becoming a "mass of flesh."
However, this zygote doesn't spend its growth phase in emptiness. It attaches to the uterus like roots firmly embedded in the soil. Through this attachment, the zygote receives essential nutrients for its growth from the mother's body.
Details like these couldn't be known without sufficient knowledge of physiology. Clearly, centuries ago, no one possessed such knowledge.
In the Arabic language, the term "‘alaq" or "mass of blood" means "something attached to a place." Literally, the term was used to describe leeches that cling to the skin to suck blood. Clearly, this is the most appropriate term to depict the zygote attached to the uterine wall to absorb nourishment from it.
There are many verses in the Quran that reveal information about this zygote. By attaching perfectly to the uterus, the zygote starts to grow. Meanwhile, the mother's womb is filled with "amniotic fluid," enveloping the zygote. The most important function of the amniotic fluid for the baby's growth is to protect the baby from external "attacks."
All the Quranic information about human formation shows that the Quran originates from a source that comprehends even the smallest of details in this matter. Once again, this proves that the Quran is the word of God.
Meanwhile, the embryo, initially resembling a gel, begins to transform over time. In this originally soft structure, hard bones start forming to support the body's upright stance. Then, the initially identical cells begin to specialize: some form light-sensitive eye cells, nerve cells sensitive to heat, cold, and pain, and cells sensitive to sound vibrations. Are these cells determining these differences themselves? Did they autonomously decide to form the human heart or eye, then complete these remarkable tasks? Or, conversely, were they created precisely for these purposes? Wisdom, intelligence, and reason undoubtedly affirm the latter alternative.
At the end of the process, after the baby has fully grown within its mother's womb, it is born into the world. Now, the baby is 100 million times larger and 6 billion times heavier than its initial form.
This is the story of the origin of human life, not of any other creature. So, what could be more significant for humans than knowing the purpose of this astounding creation?
It's highly illogical to think that all these complex functions occur "by their own will." No one possesses the power to create themselves, others, or objects. It is Allah who creates all these events described earlier, at every moment of their occurrence, every second, and every stage.
Our bodies, formed from "a drop of semen," transform into humans with millions of intricate balances. Though unnoticed by us, our bodies contain an immensely complex and intricate system that aids our survival. All these systems are designed and operated solely by our Owner and Creator, Allah, to remind us that "we are created."
Human beings are created by Allah. Since creation, humans have never been "left without guidance or purpose."
Three Dark Areas
After fertilization, the baby's growth takes place in three distinct regions:
1. Fallopian tubes: the area where the egg and sperm unite and where the ovary connects to the uterus.
2. Within the uterine lining where the zygote attaches for development.
3. The area where the embryo begins to grow within a sac filled with specialized fluid.
Breast Milk...
How is a newborn human, transformed from a sperm to an infant, nourished? This is a marvel in itself. Breast milk is the best nourishment, and it isn't produced with the help of the mother or anyone else. Thanks to the nutrients it contains, breast milk is the superior food source for a newborn, enhancing the mother and baby's immunity against diseases. Doctors agree that formula should only be given when breast milk is insufficient, and infants should primarily receive breast milk, especially in the first months. Now, let's explore the uniqueness of breast milk:
- The most intriguing aspect is that breast milk's composition changes according to the stages of the baby's growth. Caloric content and nutrients vary based on the baby's condition at birth, whether premature or full-term. If premature, breast milk contains higher fat and protein levels than usual because premature babies need more calories.
- Immune system components required by the baby, such as antibodies or defense cells, are present in breast milk. Like hired soldiers, they defend the baby's body, which is foreign to them, and shield the baby from enemies.
- Breast milk is antibacterial. Bacteria can grow in regular milk stored at room temperature for six hours, yet no bacteria appear in breast milk stored at the same temperature and duration.
- Breast milk guards against arteriosclerosis.
- Breast milk is easily digestible for infants.
We know that no concoction created by nutrition experts in modern laboratories has as many benefits as breast milk. How can we answer the question, "Who creates breast milk within a mother's body, even though she's unaware of the production process, and its quality surpasses lab-made alternatives?" It's already clear: breast milk is made by the Creator of the baby who needs this milk...
Mechanisms Within Our Bodies
In many verses of the Quran, Allah invites us to contemplate the creation of humans, emphasizing the incredible design of the human body formed by Allah in perfect proportions.
Humans are one of the greatest and most sophisticated living creatures. Their bodily system is the most astonishing in the world, meticulously formed by Allah.
The human body consists of a mass of flesh and bones weighing around 60-70 kg. As is known, flesh is one of the most fragile materials in nature. If left in the open, it will decay within hours, and in a few days, it will be swarmed by maggots and emit an unbearable stench. Yet, this delicate substance forms the majority of the human body. Remarkably, it remains preserved and free from decay for approximately 70-80 years due to the circulation of blood providing nourishment and the protective barrier of skin guarding against external bacteria.
Furthermore, the human body possesses truly remarkable capabilities, such as the senses. Each sensory organ is a marvel. Humans perceive the external world through these sensory tools and lead peaceful lives due to these senses. The intricate details of the visual, olfactory, tactile, auditory, and gustatory senses, along with their flawless design, provide evidence of the Creator's existence.
The awe-inspiring structure of the human body is not limited to the senses. Each organ facilitating our lives is a miracle in itself. They all function to fulfill our needs. Imagine the difficulty of life if we were created without hands. What would happen if we lacked legs, or if our bodies were covered not by skin but by thorns, scales, or hard shells?
Similarly, the existence of complex systems within the human body—respiratory, metabolic, reproductive, immune, and the aesthetics of the human form—each of these is a marvel on its own.
As evident, the human body contains numerous intricate balances. The flawless interplay among these interconnected bodily systems allows humans to perform vital functions seamlessly.
Moreover, humans accomplish all of this effortlessly, often without being consciously aware of what's happening within their bodies. They remain oblivious to many things: when digestion begins or ends in their stomach, their heart's rhythm, the circulation of the right substances to the right places, their vision, and hearing.
A flawless system has been placed within the human body, operating seamlessly. This is the system created by Allah, the Orchestrator of all affairs in the heavens and the earth. Allah created everything, every detail, and every living creature in the universe. The design we observe when studying the human body is evidence of the uniqueness and perfection in Allah's creative artistry. Allah invites us to contemplate the perfection of the universe in Surah Al-Mulk.
